Our Curriculum
We aim to inculcate in our pupils a passion for the humanities and provide them with opportunities to acquire
useful lifeskills so as to mould them into knowledgeable, responsible and competent global citizens.
The Humanities Department currently offers 5 subjects:
- Geography (Lower Secondary Geography & Upper Secondary Elective Geography)
- History (Lower Secondary History, Upper Secondary Full History, Upper Secondary Elective History)
- Literature (Lower Secondary Literature & Upper Secondary Elective Literature)
- Social Studies (Upper Secondary)
- Principles of Accounts (Upper Secondary)
The main Humanities curriculum consists of:
Social Studies
At the heart of Social Studies (SS) is the preparation of our students to be citizens of tomorrow by helping them to better understand the interconnectedness in the world they live in and appreciate the complexities of the human experience. Drawing on the social life
that is of meaning and interest to the learners, SS seeks to inspire mental eagerness and evoke students’ curiosity to inquire into real-world issues that concern their lives.
Through inquiry and authentic learning experiences, SS helps students to attain relevant knowledge and understandings about these issues, develop critical and reflective thinking skills, and appreciate multiple perspectives. Civic competencies, which encompass the body of knowledge, skills and values expressed in the Philosophy of SS, will empower students to be informed, concerned and participative citizens.
Geography
Geography emphasises the integrative study of physical and human environments to enable students to gain a better understanding of their own space and other parts of the world. It also focuses on the interconnectedness among groups of people, and between people and their environment.
Geography also imbues in students an awareness of appropriate attitudes and values that promotes a positive geographical future; one that ensures the sustainability of our resources, people, country, and planet.
History
The study of History seeks to develop in students a critical appreciation of past human experiences and connections between the past and present. It also equips them with the necessary historical knowledge, understanding, dispositions and skills to understand the present and contribute actively and responsibly as local and global citizens.
Pedagogy & Programmes
Every humanities lesson is an exercise in inquiry. Students will develop critical thinking skills through questioning and data analysis while attaining subject mastery. ICT skills will also be embedded in the teaching and learning of Humanities at Bukit View Secondary. We aim to make every learner a concerned citizen by exposing students to a variety of themes and in-depth discussions of current affairs as part of our lessons.
- Use of Visible Thinking routines to help students draw connections to what they are learning.
- Use of WRAITEC questioning in the classroom to stimulate critical and analytical thinking, as well as articulate their views and opinions.
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is harnessed to further both self-directed and collaborative learning.
- Mind mapping as an essential learning tool for organisation of core ideas and facilitatingcontent mastery.
- Geographical Investigation (GI) and Historical Investigation (HI) allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical situations.
- Local and overseas learning journeys inject excitement and add realism in the study of the Humanities.
