ASEAN Eco-Schools Award 2019
Our school received the ASEAN Eco-Schools Award 2019 in October.
The ASEAN Eco-Schools Award is an ASEAN initaitive to recognise exemplary efforts of eco-schools in ASEAN Member States (AMS) in inculcating environmental awareness in every aspect of education to their students and surrounding communities.
National Day Award 2019
Mrs Shirley Lee and Mr Alexander Chia received the Commendation Medal as part of the 2019 National Day Awards!
Public Service Commission(PSC) Scholarship
Kang Boon Kiat, Julian (Class of 2015) was awarded one of the prestigious Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarships for 2019.
Possessing not just strong academic performance, Julian demonstrates a heart for service, an ethos of excellence and team work, and a strong sense of duty.
We wish him all the best in his commitment to Singapore.
He is one of nine Polytechnic recipients in 2019 and the first Bukit Viewan to receive a PSC Scholarship.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship (Engineering) was launched in 2017. In partnership with three engineering clusters in the Public Service, namely Defence and Security, Information and Communications Technology & Smart Systems, and Infrastructure & Environment, the scholarship aims to develop and groom individuals for leadership positions in the engineering and technology sectors.
The Outstanding Innovator Award 2019
Congratulations to Mr Low Chee Wah for being awarded the Outstanding Innovator Award 2019 (Schools) by MOE! The Outstanding Innovator Award recognises passionate individuals who are key influencers of continual improvement and drive innovation in their workplace.
The Most Inspiring Teacher of English Award 2019
Congratulations to Ms Gopal for being nominated as The Most Inspiring Teacher of English Award 2019! Inspiring Teacher of English Award recognises teachers who have been instrumental in igniting a love for the English language and are effective in helping their students speak and write better.
Singapore Centre for Chinese Language Visit
On Thu 3 Oct, our Chinese Language department was privileged to host Dr Foo Suan Fong, Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language and Prof Jiao Jianli from the South China Normal University. Their visit showcased the good work done by our Chinese Language teachers in developing engaged learners, as well as Bukit View Secondary’s efforts to integrate ICT in school and environmental advocacy. Prof Jiao enjoyed his visit and has shared his blog post with us.

Our latest facility – the Gear Up room, was featured on SGBC Facebook page. Gear up room is an after school care centre for our students!
Fitted out with certified sustainable materials from SGBC Member organisations, the centre is also designed with a collaborative intent, the wide open spaces and colourful furniture sure to foster fruitful discussions. The room is healthy and productive for occupants as well.

We would like to thank Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung, for paying us a visit. In addition to learning about our JOULES* Applied Learning Programme, Minister also spent time chatting with students about their experiences in school and had a dialogue with staff about recent policy shifts. We are glad to have been able to share how we are developing students through our Positive Education approach.

Singapore and Asian Schools Maths Olympiad (SASMO)
Our students have achieved 3 bronze and 3 silver!

Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJCHO)

Singapore International Youth Innovation and Enterprise by Design Competition
2 teams of Secondary Three students took part in the Singapore International Youth Innovation and Enterprise by Design Competition on Saturday 27 July 2019, held at Nanyang Technological University.
Two teams received Gold and Bronze awards, with one team also receiving the Most Innovative Idea Award. The members displayed zest and grit during their presentation, impressing judges and teams from other countries.
Singapore Junior Water Prize (SJWP) 2019
Bukit View Secondary continues to achieve and excel at the Singapore Junior Water Prize this year! The team of Sec 2 students came in 1st runners-up in the U-15 category with their project titled ‘Conserving Water Through the Web’ which allows households to track their water usage online. Another Sec 4 team was awarded the commendation award for their project titled ‘BVSS Automated Farming’ which explores the use of technology to improve the efficacy of farming. The SJWP is organised by the Lien Foundation, Sembcorp Industries and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and supported by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency.
National Schools Literature Festival
On 20th July, 3 teams of students took part in the annual National Schools Literature Festival.
The Sec 3 debate team came in as the winner!
Below are the details:
Sec 2 Book Trailer: Students from 2A placed second in the Lower Sec Book Trailer competition. They acted out scenes from their Literature book, ‘The Car and other Plays’
Sec 1 Choral Reading: Students from 1B and 1D performed a choral reading of the poem, ‘The Crocodile’s Toothache’ by Shel Silverstein.
Sec 3 Debate team: Students from the Upper Sec Lit classes won their Unseen Poem debate against Hougang Secondary Secondary School. The two poems in the debate were ‘Sore’ by Pooja Nansi and ‘A dream within a dream’ by Edgar Allan Poe.
Singapore Youth Festival Celebrations 2019

Congratulations to Mr Low Chee Wah, Mr Aw Kang Foong and Ms Sharmila Gopal on receiving the MOE Innergy Award (Bronze) for the development of the Interactive ECG Goal-Setting Tool. The team, represented by Mr Low, received their award at the recent Teachers Conference 2019.
The Innergy Award recognises teams that have spent time developing, testing and implementing innovations to bring about significant benefits in MOE.
The ECG tool, which has been implemented in Bukit View, has helped students to make informed decisions in their preparation for post-secondary education. With this user-friendly interactive tool, students are able to calibrate their targets and engage themselves in a more meaningful target setting exercises.

One of the school’s 2 distinctive programme is our Learning for Life programme (LLP) which focused on teaching character through drama. The spirit of care and share is strong. The act titled “Grandpa” was so touching, not many in the audience had their eyes dry. One person in the audience was overheard commenting, “the grandfather so pitiful!”

Green Schools @ South West Competition
The Environmental Club has clinched the Green Schools @ South West 2018 Sustained Achievement Award. This award is given to schools which have made efforts in empowering students to adopt, promote and champion good environmental practices. The award recognises the school for having obtained 3 consecutive years of Gold Award
2018 GCE O level Result
Our 2018 O-level students have done very well! More than 96% of the Sec 4 Express students achieved 5 or more O levels passes. Many of our students were able to select a post-secondary path of their choice and are currently pursuing their studies in institutions such as Anglo-Chinese Junior College, National Junior College, Hwa Chong Institution, Jurong Pioneer Junior College, Singapore Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
National Digital Storytelling Competition
A team of students from the Infocomm Club has won the Championship Award at the inaugural National Digital Storytelling Competition held on 22 Oct 2018. This competition is jointly organised by Microsoft and the National Library Board.

This scholarship/award is part of the JOULES programme, which is the enhanced Environmental Science Programme at Bukit View Secondary School. This distinctive 4-year programme not only provides Bukit Viewans with the knowledge and experience in the area of environment and sustainable energy, it also emphasises the development of environmental student leadership. We hope that through the JOULES programme, Bukit Viewans will be keen to pursue STEM in their higher education, especially in the area of environment and sustainable energy, and thereby contribute to Singapore and the world.

Soo Kar Weng 2E1 is an award winner at the South-East Asia Short Track Trophy 2018 Skating Competition.

Our track and Field B Boys, B Girls and C Boys 4 x 100m teams qualified for the Semi Finals of the National Schools Track and Field Championships 2018. This is the best result achieved by Track and field team.

Kee Chin Yuin, 3E3 received an Honourable Mention Award at the “By The Minute” On-the-spot Photography Competition by the W2 Cluster.
Largest Rangoli made in Singapore by a duo
Rakshita Deivanai of Sec 1D, along with her mother Ms. Sudhadevi Ravchandran, drew the largest Rangoli to commemorate Singapore’s 53rd birthday. The feat has been recorded in the Singapore Book of Records as the largest Rangoli made in Singapore by a duo.
National Day Parade 2018
Our students from Sec 1A and 1B put up a fantastic performance during the National Day Parade. After many weeks of practice and hard work, their effort paid off and it has definitely been an unforgettable experience for all of them.
Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad 2018

The Military Band achieved a Bronze Award for their participation in the Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF).
BCA Green Mark Award (GoldPlus) 2018
Bukit View Secondary School is a proud recipient of the abovementioned award. The BCA Green Mark Scheme is an initiative to shape a more environmentally friendly and sustainable built environment.
Singapore Junior Water Prize 2018
The school won 3rd prize in the Singapore Junior Water Prize this year!
The team of three Sec 3 students, Marvyn Chia (3E1), Yeo Swe Hon (3E1) and Zane Chua (3E1) did us proud in the U-15 category with their ‘BVSS Water Monitoring Device, Version 2 (BVSSWMD V2)’, which allows the public to track their current water usage.
Another U-15 team consisting of Ang Sheng Heng (2E1), Lovell Loh (2E1) and Muhammed Syarifuddin (2E1) was awarded the certificate of participation for their ‘Rubber Cubes Project’ which reduces the rate of evaporation in reservoirs by using rubber cubes to cover the surface of the water, without affecting much of the aquatic life.

SYF 2018 Celebrations in the Community
The ELDDS participated in PLAY! @The Library: A Drama Showcase. A group of 10 students put up the performance for the public at Jurong Regional Library on 1 July 2018. They staged a devised performance based on a chosen set of props and stimuli.
SYF 2018 Dance Extravangza@Bukit Panjang Plaza
Our BVSS Dance Club members performed at the SYF 2018 Dance Extravaganza @Bukit Panjang Plaza on 1 July 2018. It celebrates youth dance, exuberant energy and dynamic vigour through multi-genre dance performances.
SYF Celebrations 2018: Dramatised Reading at the National Gallery Singapore
A group of 11 Secondary 2 students has been selected by Ministry of Education to perform at National Gallery Singapore as part of the SYF Celebrations 2018. They brought to life co-devised scripts through dramatised reading, and shared their learning experiences with the audience on 29 and 30 June 2018.
SYF 2018 Illuminate!
Two groups of our students have passed the auditions for the SYF 2018 Illuminate event and performed at United Square on 30th June and 1st July 2018. This showcase featured talented youths from the various Primary and Secondary schools in Singapore.
This is the second time that our Bukit Viewans have been selected to perform for this event.

‘Remembering’: Performance at the Singapore Heritage Festival (SHF)
As part of the Learning for Life Programme, some of our Secondary 2 students performed five mini-skits for the public at the Singapore Heritage Festival on 8 April 2018. The SHF is an annual community outreach event which aims to promote awareness and appreciation of Singapore’s rich heritage.
The audience were treated to an evening of nostalgia and laughter as they reminisced about life in the western part of Singapore. It was definitely a night of remembering and a night to remember for our Secondary 2 participants.
Achievements in Mother Tongue Languages Competitions
- Maethaavi (The Quiz Arena) organised by Mediacorp is a National Level Secondary School quiz show which tests students on their Tamil Language proficiency, general knowledge as well as mathematical skills.Our team of students comprising of Tatchineshwaran (2N1), Harish Bose (3E2), Siva Meyyappan (3E1) and R Hari Krishna (4E1), emerged 2nd runners-up.
- 31st Literary Competitions organized by Raffles Institution: Our students, Nagarajan Vasanthan (3E2), Senthil Prasad Arul Prasth (2E3), Parameswaran Srivathsan (2E3), Shankkarie (2E3) won 3rd Prize for Drama Competition and Olivia Ezhilvalagan (2E1) won consolation prize in the Writing Competition.
- Pesta Pantun 2018 organised by NUS PBMKS: Our 2E1 ML students, Nur Dini Izzati Azhar, Nur Syazlyarni Zazali, Sri Wirdani Irdayu M Jasni and Rilla Edora Rozaini got into the semi-finals with Sri Wirdani winning the Pemantun Harapan (Hopeful Reciter) title.
Caring Teacher Award
Congratulations to Mr Tan Huong, Mrs Kelly Chew, Mr Jonathan Cheah, Mr Arthur Kok and Mdm Quek Eng Chiew for receiving the Caring Teacher Award.
The Caring Teacher Award is a biennial event that pays tribute to teachers who show care and concern for the holistic development of their students, and go the extra mile to ensure their charges grow up to be confident and independent learners.
Started in 1996, the Caring Teacher Awards is organised by National Institute of Education with support from ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and Ministry of Education.
7th annual art teachers’ exhibition, aedge 2018: Of Thoughts and Processes
Our Art teacher, Ms Siti Nurhidayu teamed up with another Art teacher from Greenridge Secondary to produce an artwork titled ‘Analog’. It was exhibited at the 7th annual art teachers’ exhibition, aedge 2018: Of Thoughts and Processes, from 6/3/18 to 18/3/18 at the
SOTA Art Gallery. Their artwork was selected through an open call and was one of 16 artworks selected from Art educators in Singapore.
The School Choir performed at the Voices of Singapore Festival in front of a sold‐out crowd on 12 March 2018.
BVSS Dance Club performed at Spring Surprise 2018 at Gardens by the Bay on 26 Feb, Monday. It was well‐received by the local audience and international tourists.
Badminton B Division boys
Our BVSS Badminton B Division boys qualify to Second Round in the West Zone National Badminton Championship. We are now one of the Top 8 teams in West Zone.
Our Girls’ Brigade achieved a Gold Award in 2017 and sustained their sixth Gold Award in a row!
National Cadet Corps (NCC)
- NCC achieved the Gold Award in the Best Unit Competition 2017.
- The NCC cadets were also awarded Free Style Drill Top 7 in the West District in March 2018.
- Brian Ong Ren Yi of 3E2 was awarded the Best NCC Cadet for the 13th Advanced Drills Course
National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Unit Overall Proficiency Award 2017
NPCC achieved the Gold Award in the Unit Overall Proficiency Award 2017.
IDE Maker Engineering Award
Our Sec 2 Infocomm team, comprising Lim Zi Yang (2E3), Irshath Ali s/o Ibrahim Adhuham (2E3) and Gigi Wong Qi Hui (2E3) won the IDE Maker Engineering Award on 15 March 2018.
The team created an innovative solar energy tracking device. This device will optimally position solar panels using servo motor based on the light sensors’ readings placed at strategic positions.
RoboCupJunior CoSpace Pei Hwa Challenge 2018
Zane Chua (3E1), Gurunathan Sampravinraj (3E1), Xu Zhiqiang (3E1) & Nusrat Begum Binte Syed Habibur Rahman (2E3) from the Infocomm Club won the Championship Award at the RoboCupJunior CoSpace Pei Hwa Challenge 2018.

Invitation by Henkel Singapore to share our Environmental Education effort
On 28 Feb 2018, Mr Gabriel Wong, our Vice-Principal, was invited to share our environmental education efforts at Henkel Singapore alongside Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Little Footprints Preschool, National Environmental Agency and NUS Biological Sciences, who shared on various climate and environmental topics.
Year Of Climate Action – Mass Pledging Feb 2018
According to Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR), Bukit View Sec is also the first school to organise mass pledging sessions for climate action, collecting a total of 1030 pledges from staff and students.
SEC-Starhub School Green Awards 2017
Bukit View Secondary achieved the Lotus Sustained Achievement Award in the SEC-Starhub School Green Awards 2017. This award has validated our efforts in shaping a greener and better environment for all.
Ecofriend Award 2017
Our HOD Partnership, Mr Heng Chong Yong was awarded the Ecofriend Award 2017. Launched in 2007 by the NEA, the annual Ecofriend Awards aim to recognise individuals, who have contributed their personal time and effort to protect, promote and enhance our Clean and Green environment.

The following students from Infocomm Club achieved 2nd Place Award at the Singapore National CoSpace & RoboMaker Challenge 2017.

Friends in Concert: Our Voices!
2 teachers, Mr Jailani and Mdm Joy Chen performed at the Friends in Concert: Our Voices!” at the National Gallery of Singapore on 12 Aug 2017. Their ensemble, made up of Primary and Secondary Music teachers, was part of a soft launch for a collection of songs written for Music teaching and learning.
National Day Awards 2017

Outstanding Computing Teacher Award 2017
Mr Sirajutheen Shahul Hameed has been awarded the Outstanding Computing Teacher Award this year. Upon receiving the award in October, Mr Sirajutheen will receive sponsorship to attend an overseas Computing conference. Thereafter, he will be invited to share his learning points at a local Computing conference with the fraternity.

Dr Low Guat Tin (LGT) Challenge 2017
Our Girls’ Brigade achieved a Gold Award in 2016 and sustained Five Gold Awards in five years. 11 students from Girls’ Brigade won the Gold and Silver Awards at the Dr Low Guat Tin (LGT) Challenge 2017.
B’dazzled Show Choir Competition 2017
Our Choir obtained a Platinum (Silver) award at the B’dazzled Show Choir Competition on 29th July 2017.
Joshua Chang’s (3N1) painting was submitted for the President’s Challenge and clinched the Merit award. It was exhibited at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School where the President graced the event on 5 Aug 2017.
Lee Jia-Yi, Joey (4E2), from the Media & Publicity Club has won third prize in Iconography 2017, a photographic competition organised by Hwa Chong Photographic Society.

National Schools Track & Field Championships
36 students represented BVSS in the National Schools Track & Field Championships. The relay teams for 4x100m in the C Boys, B Boys and C Girls divisions qualified for the semifinals. Nada Nabilah of 5N2 qualified for the Semi-finals of the B Division Girls 100m Competition.
Singapore Junior Water Prize
The school has won 1st prize in the Singapore Junior Water Prize for the second consecutive year. Marvyn Chia (2E1), Yeo Swe Hon (2E1) and Zane Chua (2E1) took part in the U-15 category. The group came up with the BVSS Water Monitoring Device (BVSSWMD), which allows the public to know their current water usage.
Singapore Polytechnic Scholarship (Engineering)
Kang Boon Kiat Julian, class of 2015 (4E1) was selected for this year’s Singapore Polytechnic Scholarship (Engineering). The award recognises students with excellent academic achievements, outstanding leadership
qualities and significant accomplishments in co-curricular activities. He is currently pursuing a Diploma in
Electrical and Electronic Engineering at SP.

RoboCupJunior CoSpace Pei Hwa Challenge 2017

President Award for Environment (PAE)- 27 September 2016
The PAE is the highest environmental accolade for individuals, educational institutions and organisations that have made outstanding contributions towards environmental and water resource sustainability in Singapore.
It is an annual award organised by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) that recognises and honours the sustained environment- and water-related contributions by environmental champions from the People, Public and Private (3P) sectors.
SEC-LEE Foundation Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (Public Sector)
Bukit View Secondary was awarded the SEC-Lee Foundation Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (Public Sector) by Singapore Environment Council (SEC). The Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards (SEAA) is one of the most prestigious environmental awards in Singapore and the region.
Launched in 1997 to recognise overall environmental stewardship by organisations, the award has recognised 80 organisations across Singapore and the region.
Innergy (Schools) Award 2016
Bukit View Secondary won the Innergy (Schools) Award 2016 for the Teaching and Learning Category for project title – “Coding and Computional Thinking Infused (Cactus)” Curriculum package.
MOE administers the Innergy Awards to recognise innovative projects that have brought about significant benefits to stakeholders.
A total of 349 nominations were received this year from 153 schools. These applications were put through a rigourous evaluation process including panels of representatives from the Professional and Services Wing Divisions. Of these 349 nominations, 21 submissions have won this year’s MOE’s Innergy Award.

Our ex-student, Bryan Oh Zi Xiang, together with his buddy, have won 1st place in the F2C Team Race category in the FAI F2 World Championships for Control Line Model Aircraft competition held in Perth, Australia from May 7 to 13. This world class event has 32 countries and about 375 individuals competing in various events. Congratulations to SYFC!
Community In Bloom 2016
We were awarded the Community-In-Bloom Silver Award by NParks.
This award aims to recognise community gardeners for their effort in creating and maintaining community gardens that help play a role in realising our ‘City in a Garden’ vision.

Singapore Junior Water Prize 2016

won the 1st Prize at the Singapore Junior Water Prize 2016 (U-15 category) held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Convention Centre on 27 May 2016.
The other 14 participating teams, which include NUS High School, Hwa Chong Institution, Riverside Secondary and Temasek Junior College, provided stringent competition for our students who displayed the values of excellence, resilience and perseverance to eventually emerge as champions!
